Opinion., that traces John Boyd from Energy-Maneuverability Theory through Destruction and Creation and Patterns of Conflict into the modern concepts of Decision Advantage, Cognitive Advantage, Narrative Intelligence, and Cognitive Security. She spent her career in Ukraine's security forces, led public affairs departments, and finished her last NATO posting at Joint Force Command Naples in 2024. She retired two months ago and now heads analytical output at a private firm.
Her central claim is that orientation is the target. Information arriving at two people produces two different decisions, because orientation is where that information meets prior experience, knowledge, values, and culture. Cognitive operations are therefore designed to work on orientation rather than to transmit or deny information.
Brian "Ponch" Rivera and Pavlovska follow that through the progression her paper lays out, from material advantage to information advantage to decision advantage to cognitive advantage, and into Dr. James Giordano's argument that cognitive security means protecting the biological, psychological, and social foundations of cognition itself. Those three levels sit very close to the inputs Boyd puts inside the orientation box.
