Between 1984 and 2007, Lonnie David Franklin Jr. — later nicknamed the "Grim Sleeper" for an apparent 14-year gap in his crimes — murdered women across South Los Angeles. In 2016 he was convicted of killing nine women and a teenage girl, sentenced to death, and died in prison in 2020. That much is settled record. What isn't settled is what happened to the rest of the women in his photo collection.

When Franklin was arrested in July 2010, investigators recovered almost 1,000 photographs and hours of video from his home. In December 2010, the LAPD took the unusual step of releasing 180 of those images publicly, hoping someone would recognize a face. Years later, a significant number of those women have still never been identified.
