The World at War - Part VII - Germany Under Siege (Myth20c - Ep301)

Episode Description

Throughout history, man has fought and died on the battlefield of war. Civilian non-combatants, if affected, were subject to siege, depredations and pillage - but rarely faced the same level of slaughter as their front line compatriots. In World War II, however, the degree to which the civilian population became the targets themselves reached an unprecedented level - as was the case when British and American bomber command targeted scores of German cities and neighborhoods bearing little to no military strategic value - resulting in over 1 million civilian casualties and dwarfing the losses suffered by the British during the Blitz by over 10 times. Tonight we are rejoined by Thomas777 to discuss the moral foundations, or lack thereof, for this type of warfare, and ramifications it had on the Cold War and to the very face of the European landscape, culture, and people to this day.
