Episode Description
“Sticks and stones may break my bones, but words will never hurt me” is one of the biggest lies we learn as kids. I’m Aaron, and I’m putting that saying on trial with real memories that still carry weight decades later, because the truth is simple: words don’t just sting, they stick. And once they stick, they can shape how you see your body, your abilities, and your place in the world.
I start with a story from my own house a split-second Halloween scare I thought was funny. My son was only two or three, and that one moment helped wire in a fear of the dark that followed him as he grew up. That’s the uncomfortable part of parenting and relationships: impact is not measured by intent, and a “small” moment can become a core memory. From there, I connect the dots through childhood body shame, school fitness tests, peer ridicule, and the way a single comment can turn into a lifelong narrative of “I’m a failure.”
Then I take it into adulthood and talk about law enforcement culture, where sarcasm, public shaming, and tearing people down can get labeled as toughness. I’m not asking anyone to be soft. I’m asking us to be accurate about human beings: even the strongest-looking person has feelings, and your words can either reinforce someone’s worst story or help them rewrite it.
If you’ve ever laughed off a joke that hurt, or you’ve ever been the one who said something without thinking, this one will hit. Subscribe for more, share this with someone who needs it, and leave a review that tells me what words you’re choosing more carefully after listening.
