Holding that headline is like holding a time capsule from the first morning after 9/11, when America was grieving, scared, and trying to figure out what the next hour would bring, let alone the next 25 years. That’s where we start: not with a history lecture, but with a conversation about time, perspective, uncertainty, service, and the kind of loss that splits life into “before” and “after.”
I share where I was when the world stopped turning: standing in a Walmart electronics department in Phoenix as every TV showed the attacks and the whole store went silent. I also remember something small that says everything about that week, trying to buy a classroom flag for my wife and finding every single one sold out. That detail opens up a bigger question about American unity, patriotism, and community. Why did it feel like we could drop the labels and come together then, and why does it feel so hard now?
From there we zoom out to the “before and after” days each of us carries: the phone call, the diagnosis, the career change, the marriage, the loss. As a first responder, I’ve seen how fast ordinary turns into life-changing, and the lesson isn’t to live in fear. The lesson is to stop postponing your life, to turn down the white noise, and to choose who you’re going to be while history is happening.
