For most of recorded music history, loving music meant touching it. The music was obviously the reason for buying the album, but the ritual around it became part of the experience, and that physical connection helped turn songs into memories.

That relationship survived several major format changes because vinyl, cassettes and CDs all required the listener to physically interact with the music. Even as the technology improved, you still had something in your hand, something on a shelf and something you could loan to a friend who would promise to return it in perfect condition before handing it back three months later looking like it had been used as a drink coaster.
