Episode Description

Too Long Didn’t Listen

* Ranked choice voting is officially on the November 3rd ballot, 6-1. Crist in opposition.

* The election cycle stagger is also on the November ballot, 5-2. Crist and McCoy in opposition. Contingent on RCV passing.

* Open space charter amendment on the November ballot, 6-1. Crist in opposition. Would require voter approval before the city can sell or repurpose open space.

* Public safety tax cleared first reading, 6-1, and is headed to the ballot. Crist in opposition. Council chose the 70/30 sales-to-property-tax split, with an amendment adding behavioral health and crisis response to what the tax can fund. Second reading August 25th.

* Composting subsidy passed 5-2. Marsing and Prieto in opposition. Right now composting customers pay the full cost of the service. Council directed staff to develop a new rate structure for 2027-28 that spreads some of that cost across all solid waste customers, making composting cheaper and hopefully driving up participation toward Longmont’s zero waste goal.

* Short-term rental trial ordinance cleared first reading unanimously. Two amendments added: renters can now get the license with landlord permission, and affordable housing residents are no longer excluded. Second reading August 25th.
