Episode Description

For BYU, unseating Texas Tech at the summit of the Big 12 is the ultimate mission following a bitter conclusion to their previous campaign. Though the Cougars put together a stellar run, their path to the College Football Playoff was blocked twice by the Red Raiders—most notably in a bruising conference championship game at AT&T Stadium. To finally pass Texas Tech and capture the league crown, BYU must leverage its distinct identity and exploit structural changes in Lubbock.

The primary catalyst for BYU will be its physical ground game, anchored by reigning Big 12 Player of the Year LJ Martin. Against a Red Raiders defense that thrives on high-tempo disruption, ball control and sustained clock management are essential. If the Cougars' veteran offensive line can establish early dominance in the trenches, it neutralizes the pass-rush pressure that plagued them in past matchups and forces Texas Tech to play out of character.

Defensively, BYU must find answers for the Red Raiders’ explosive aerial attack. Last year’s losses exposed gaps when the secondary was left stretched too thin against elite tempo. Head coach Kalani Sitake’s staff needs disciplined, assignment-sure coverage and timely pressure to disrupt Texas Tech's rhythm.

Furthermore, capitalizing on the Red Raiders' offseason roster turnover and high-profile departures will be crucial. While Texas Tech remains the presumptive favorite, they enter the year facing heightened expectations and internal adjustments. BYU enters with continuity, an experienced core, and the immense motivation of a bitter rival standing directly between them and a first-round playoff bye.

If the Cougars can protect home field in Provo, minimize explosive plays allowed, and lean on their punishing rushing attack, they have the precise blueprint to flip the script, clear the Texas Tech hurdle, and claim the Big 12 throne.
