Episode Description

The high school Class of 2022 sparked a massive shift in collegiate athletics by legally protesting and challenging the NCAA’s newly structured "five-in-five" eligibility model. When the NCAA instituted a framework allowing athletes five years of competition within a strict five-year window starting from initial full-time enrollment, it explicitly drew a line that excluded athletes who had entered college in the fall of 2022 and exhausted their traditional four years.

This exclusion felt deeply unjust to the Class of 2022. Having begun their collegiate careers right on the heels of the COVID-19 pandemic, these student-athletes argued that they faced unique, unprecedented disruptions, truncated development, and altered competitive environments that later cohorts did not endure. Feeling left out of sweeping eligibility reforms, a collective group of players launched petitions and took legal action against the governing body.

The pushback culminated in major courtroom victories. Plaintiffs filed lawsuits arguing that arbitrarily omitting their specific class caused irreparable harm. Federal and state courts agreed, granting preliminary injunctions—most notably a class-wide ruling by a U.S. District Court judge in Colorado—that dismantled the NCAA’s implementation timeline. The rulings effectively forced the NCAA to recognize a fifth season of eligibility for all Division I athletes from the 2022 cohort who had just completed their fourth year.
