Episode Description
Telomeres shorten every time many of our cells divide. Once they become too short, those cells can lose their ability to keep dividing. But what happens if you can lengthen them again?
Dr. Bill Andrews explains how research into telomerase opened that possibility and what happened when scientists restored telomerase activity in experimental cells and mice. He also discusses where gene therapy fits into the picture and the risks that still stand in the way.

He earned his Ph.D. in Molecular and Population Genetics from the University of Georgia in 1981. As Director of Molecular Biology at Geron Corporation, Andrews was one of the principal researchers involved in identifying the RNA and protein components of human telomerase. He later founded Sierra Sciences in 1999 to continue researching telomere maintenance and its potential applications in human longevity.
