A new report into multiculturalism shows that for migrants, a sense of belonging in the postcode where you live is key, and comes quicker than a sense of belonging to the country overall.

But rising rents and gentrification are reshaping communities, sometimes pushing out the very cultural identities that made them vibrant in the first place.

And all of this is unfolding against the backdrop of loud, very public conversations about immigration — debates that often centre on who gets to "belong" in the first place.
