António Guterres will step down as UN Secretary-General at the end of the year, after a decade in the job. He leaves a UN under pressure from wars, funding cuts and deepening rivalry between the major powers, with US President, Donald Trump openly challenging the organisation. Now the race is on to choose his successor, who will take over in January 2027.
