Jeffrey Manchester became known across the country as “The Roofman” after a bizarre string of rooftop robberies in the late 1990s. But getting caught was only the beginning.

After escaping a North Carolina prison in 2004, Manchester created a hidden life in Charlotte that sounds almost impossible: baby monitors used for surveillance, nighttime bike rides through Toys “R” Us, a secret room inside an abandoned Circuit City, church services under the fake name John Zorn, and a relationship with a woman who had no idea the man she was dating was a wanted fugitive.
