Nichols compares leadership to a T-shirt with the word "leader" printed on the front and a bullseye on the back, one she wears whole on the good days and the hard ones. She traces that resolve to her grandmother's question, "Did you forget what you were made of?" and to years spent borrowing other people's view of her until she could hold it herself. She walks into every room now deciding the temperature before the room decides it for her. "This room is not a bonus for you," she says. "This room is a result of your choices."
