What happens when the justice system gets it catastrophically wrong? Neil Mercer has spent over five decades as a journalist unafraid of the hard stories, as evidenced in his latest book Falsely Convicted. 

In this episode, Neil joins Gary to unpack two of Australia's most shocking miscarriages of justice. First, the wrongful conviction of schoolteacher Josephine Greensill, whose life was torn apart by allegations from two former students dredged up from three decades earlier. Then, the case of Andrew Mallard, who was wrongfully convicted for the 1994 murder of Perth shopkeeper Pamela Lawrence. Gary also shares a confronting personal account from his early career as a detective, illustrating how difficult it can be to halt the "machinery of the justice system" once it's in motion, even when doubts about guilt begin to surface.
