Episode Description
If you've noticed your traffic getting weird — fewer clicks, but the people who do find you already know who you are — you're not imagining it. The way people find businesses split into three lanes, and most of us are still optimizing for one.
Here's the short version: someone looking for what you do might type it into Google, might search it inside Instagram or TikTok, or might just ask an AI assistant and take the answer it gives them. Three completely different systems, three different sets of rules, and one very tired business owner trying to keep up.
In this episode I walk through what each one actually rewards, and where they overlap — because that overlap is where you should be spending your time.
In this episode:
- Why "getting discovered" stopped meaning "ranking on Google" — and what replaced it
- What Google is rewarding now that AI answers sit above the results
- How social platforms became search engines, and why your captions matter more than your hashtags
- What AI tools are actually pulling from when they recommend a business
- The one thing all three systems agree on (and why it's good news for small businesses)
- Where to start if you only have an hour this week
A few things I want you to walk away with:
Being findable is not the same as being everywhere. You do not need to be on every platform to be discovered on the ones that matter. What you need is to be clear enough, specific enough, and consistent enough that a machine can tell what you do and who you do it for.
Specificity beats volume. The businesses getting surfaced right now aren't the loudest ones — they're the ones whose message is legible. If a person can't tell what you do in five seconds, an algorithm definitely can't.
And you're not behind. This shift is new enough that nobody has a decade-long head start on you. Starting now is genuinely starting on time.
Want help with this?
If you want to work on your own discoverability, that's the thing I coach on most — it comes up in nearly every session. You can find the details on coaching and The Growth Intensive at growyourstrategy.co.
Subscribe wherever you listen so you don't miss the next one. And if this was useful, sending it to one business owner friend does more for the show than any algorithm.
