Episode 5: Calling Before Strategy

A church can finish a strategic plan, approve the priorities, assign the next steps, and still not know what God is asking it to become.

In this episode of Governance That Listens, Keith Clark-Hoyos reflects on why Calling must come before strategy. Planning is a responsible part of church leadership. Churches need priorities, budgets, timelines, decision pathways, communication, role clarity, and accountability. But when strategic planning begins before discernment, the church may become organized around activity without becoming clearer about its purpose.

This episode considers what happens when churches move too quickly into growth plans, program decisions, building-use strategies, budget conversations, or staffing priorities before they have listened deeply for Calling. It also introduces the importance of discerning the congregation’s season. A church may assume it needs a growth strategy when the deeper need is clarity, sustainability, witness, or discernment itself.

Strategy has value. It can help a church organize, focus, sequence, clarify, and support faithful action. But strategy serves best when it follows discernment. The deeper question is not only, “What should we do?” It is, “What is God inviting this church to become in this season?”
