Episode Description
Ocular rosacea is a chronic inflammatory condition affecting the eyes and eyelids. In this episode, we dive into what triggers ocular rosacea — from genetic and immune factors to environmental triggers like stress, sun exposure, spicy foods and temperature changes — and how those variables contribute to redness, burning, irritation, dryness, gritty sensations, and sensitivity to light. We also explore the symptoms people commonly experience: dry or bloodshot eyes, watery eyes, swollen or irritated eyelids, a feeling like something is in the eye, flickering vision or blurry vision, and recurrent eyelid or eye infections such as blepharitis, styes, or conjunctivitis. Without proper management, ocular rosacea may even lead to more serious complications such as meibomian-gland dysfunction or corneal damage.
In the second half of the episode we discuss effective management and treatment strategies — from daily eyelid hygiene, gentle cleansing, use of artificial tears, warm compresses and eyelid massage to reduce inflammation, to topical treatments (like anti-inflammatories, cyclosporine or tacrolimus), and in some cases, oral antibiotics or other medications. We cover why early diagnosis and lifestyle adjustments — such as avoiding known triggers — matter, and offer practical tips to help listeners manage ocular rosacea and protect their eye health. This discussion is based on scientific studies and current clinical recommendations.
