Episode Description
"Virtue" is an old word, not used much today, unless with its narrower late-19th Century meaning referring to feminine modesty and chastity. But it is a word the Founding Fathers knew well and a concept they discussed at length, for they believed that a free society could not endure without a virtuous citizenry. For them, the old broader meaning of the term applied, moral character, judgment, integrity, concern for the common good, self-restraint. A virtuous citizenry would govern themselves; a citizenry without virtue would invite or require outside government control. Benjamin Franklin said, "Man will ultimately be governed by God or by tyrants." So virtue is essential to what the Founding Fathers called "The Great Experiment." Could we, would we govern ourselves? Or would we yield to our passions and succumb to tyranny? It's a question for our 250th Year as American society seems bent upon absolutizing the pluribus at the expense of the unum.
