What if the feeling that something is missing is the very thing stealing your peace?
Welcome to Day 1 of our new 7-day meditation series, Why You Feel Lacking (And How Asteya Changes Everything).
This week, we explore Asteya, one of the foundational teachings of yoga.
Asteya is traditionally translated as non-stealing.
At first, that may sound like a simple instruction not to take what belongs to someone else.
But the deeper practice of Asteya asks us to notice all the ways we may be stealing from our own experience.
Comparison can steal contentment.
Overthinking can steal presence.
Constant striving can steal rest.
And the belief that something is always missing can steal our ability to recognize what is already here.
Today, we begin with the arc of Release.
Rather than trying to convince yourself that you should never want more, this meditation invites you to loosen your grip on the belief that you must have more in order to be whole.
🌿 Today's Meditation TechniqueVisualization
In today's practice, you'll visualize setting down the things that keep reinforcing a sense of lack.
I can desire without believing I am deficient.
✨ Today's Arc: ReleaseRelease begins with noticing.
Where does your mind repeatedly tell you:
Not enough.
Not enough time.
Not enough success.
Not enough money.
Not enough progress.
Not enough love.
Not enough of yourself.
Asteya invites us to become aware of these stories without allowing them to define the moment.
The goal is not to stop growing.
The goal is to stop treating the present as though it has no value until something else arrives.
Today's Reflection
What belief about "not enough" am I ready to release?
And consider:
What might I notice if I stopped searching for evidence that something is missing?
🕉️ The Wisdom of AsteyaAsteya is one of the five Yamas described in The Yoga Sutras of Patanjali.
The Yamas offer guidance for how we relate to the world and to ourselves.
Asteya asks us not only to refrain from taking what is not ours, but also to consider the subtler forms of taking.
We can take from our own peace by constantly comparing.
We can take from our relationships when we are physically present but mentally elsewhere.
We can take from today by continually postponing happiness until tomorrow.
Asteya gently asks:
What am I taking away from this moment by believing it should be different?
🧠 Modern Insight: Why Lack Feels So ConvincingThe brain naturally gives extra attention to what feels unresolved, uncertain, or missing.
When you believe something important is lacking, your attention can narrow around that perceived absence.
The more you look for what is missing, the easier it becomes to find evidence of it.
This is one reason comparison and scarcity can feel so consuming.
Mindfulness helps widen the field of attention.
Instead of asking only:
What is missing?
We begin to notice:
What is also here?
That small shift can change the entire experience of a moment.
💫 Today's AffirmationI release the belief that something essential is missing.
I can want more without overlooking what is already here.
I have enough for this moment.
And return to this week's affirmation:
I have enough for this moment.
I am enough in this moment.
I honor my time, energy, and attention.
"When non-stealing is established, all jewels present themselves."
— The Yoga Sutras of Patanjali, II.37
Asteya offers us a beautiful paradox.
When we stop grasping, comparing, and reaching for what is not here, we begin to notice the richness that was already present.
The "jewels" may not be material.
They may be peace.
Time.
Attention.
Connection.
Gratitude.
Or the simple realization that this moment contains more than we thought.
💛 Daily Message for Your HeartDear Friend,
You are allowed to have dreams.
You are allowed to want change.
You are allowed to grow.
But your future does not have to become the price of appreciating your present.
Today, notice when your mind says:
Something is missing.
Then gently ask:
Is that the whole truth?
Look again.
Notice one thing that is supporting you.
One thing that is working.
One thing you do not need to chase.
Sometimes abundance begins not with receiving something new, but with finally seeing what has been here all along.
With love,
Mary
🌙 Sleep Softly TonightBefore bed tonight, try this simple Asteya-inspired ritual:
- Lie down and take three slow breaths.
- Imagine placing one thing you have been grasping for beside you.
- Silently say: I do not have to solve this tonight.
- Bring to mind three things that were enough today.
- Let your final exhale soften the need for anything more.
Then quietly repeat:
For this moment, nothing is missing.
I release the need to reach.
I allow myself to rest in enough.
Let your body soften.
Let today be complete.
And allow yourself to receive the rest that is already waiting for you.
