From Diagnosis to Advocacy — The Power of Grassroots Advocacy in Lung Cancer
Overview:
Heidi Onda was a lifelong health educator and fitness trainer, married to a primary care physician, when she was diagnosed with stage IIIA inoperable lung cancer — considered “terminal” at the time — despite having no symptoms and no known risk factors. Her tumor was found incidentally on a CT scan investigating an unrelated issue. She is here today, living a high quality of life, thanks to timely access to a newly approved immunotherapy (Imfinzi) just one month before her diagnosis.
This is not just a story of survival — it’s a story of transformation, community, and advocacy. Heidi and her husband co-founded The White Ribbon Project (TWRP) to humanize the lung cancer experience, break the stigma, and drive change.
