Meet the Hosts
Dr. Mike Smith spent 26 years in the Air Force, including serving as First Sergeant for the Air Force Thunderbirds. After retiring, he became a senior leader at a Berkshire Hathaway Energy Company and earned his PhD in organizational psychology — before walking away to pursue entrepreneurship. He calls it the best decision he's ever made.
Tamara Loring has spent 24+ years helping people reimagine and reclaim the life of their dreams through career transition coaching with The Entrepreneur Source. Her own journey — guided by a coach who challenged her assumptions rather than directing her choices — is the personal foundation for everything she brings to this show.
What the Data Says
The TES Generational Career Confidence Survey for the Career Compass podcast revealed a striking contradiction at the heart of how Americans think about work and Career Ownership. The results reveal three major career threat zones: ageism, AI and automation anxiety, and toxic work environments. But the most striking finding is a glaring contradiction. While 83% of Americans believe business ownership is a viable alternative to traditional employment, and majorities say it offers more stability, security, and control, 66% of employees still say they'd prefer a traditional job.
Dr. Mike explains it from a psychological perspective: we've been conditioned since childhood to equate a steady paycheck with safety. Even as layoffs, reorgs, and AI disruption make corporate careers increasingly unstable, most people default to what they know. It's not logic — it's programming.
Job Hugging and the Coaching Solution
Post-COVID volatility has created what Tamara calls "job hugging" — clinging to unfulfilling positions out of fear rather than fulfillment. The antidote, both hosts agree, is awareness and coaching. A great coach doesn't tell you what to do. They challenge your assumptions, sharpen your thinking, and help you rediscover the unique skills and superpowers that routine work can cause you to forget.
Dr. Mike's defining insight for this episode: we can either change before we need to, or change because we have to. Proactive exploration driven by curiosity — not crisis — leads to far better outcomes.
