How Can You Tell If a Preacher Is a False Teacher? (Bible, Bros & Brew)

July 19
1h 8m

Episode Description

You can identify a false teacher by testing what they say against Scripture and watching their fruit over time. Matthew 7:15–20 says false prophets come in sheep's clothing but are known by their fruit. Second Peter 2:1–3 warns that false teachers secretly bring in destructive heresies, deny Christ, and exploit people through greed and false words. They aren't always obvious outsiders — Acts 20:30 warns they can rise up from among the church itself. The safeguard is simple: measure everything preached against the written Word of God, the way the Bereans did in Acts 17:11.

Hosts David McIntyre and Phillip Rich continue the Broken Church series on Bible, Bros & Brew, digging into what Scripture says about false teachers and false prophets. Working through Second Peter chapter 2, Matthew chapter 7, and First Timothy chapter 6, they unpack how manipulation, greed, and twisted doctrine show up in the church — sometimes from the pulpit, sometimes from the pew right next to you. Along the way, they share real-world examples of spiritual manipulation and give listeners a practical framework for becoming "fruit inspectors" in their own faith community. Producer Jon Dzyuba joins the conversation throughout.

Mini FAQ

Q: What does the Bible say about false teachers?

A: The Bible warns that false teachers secretly bring in destructive heresies, deny Christ, and exploit believers through greed (Second Peter chapter 2, verses 1–3). Jesus said they come in sheep's clothing but are recognized by their fruit (Matthew chapter 7, verses 15–20).

Q: Can a false teacher be someone inside the church?

A: Yes. Acts chapter 20, verse 30 says false teachers will rise up "from among you," not only from outside. David and Phillip explain that wolves don't always stand behind the pulpit — sometimes they're sitting in the pew next to you.

Q: How do you test what a pastor or teacher is preaching?

A: Measure it against Scripture itself, the way the Bereans did in Acts chapter 17, verse 11, and give it time — fruit takes time to show, so don't judge a teacher's character or doctrine off a single encounter.
