While no one was hurt, the incident highlights the growing challenge of teaching self-driving cars to recognize emergency situations and comes as federal regulators are demanding better.

  • Zoox is recalling all 105 robotaxis running software installed between April 23 and July 15 after identifying a flaw in how the vehicles detect heavy smoke.

  • The recall stems from a June 20 incident where an unoccupied robotaxi drove into an active fire scene obscured by smoke before braking and backing out under guidance from a remote operator. No injuries were reported.

  • Zoox issued a software update on July 15 that improves the system's ability to recognize heavy smoke, including smoke from EV fires.

  • NHTSA Chief Counsel Jonathan Morrison said there is a "clear pattern" of autonomous vehicles failing to properly respond to emergency scenes, calling on developers to improve how their systems recognize first responders and hazardous conditions.
