Episode Description
Week 18 2026-05-03
A child’s thank-you note can hit harder than any expensive gift, and that’s what surprised us again this week. We’re Doug Meadows and the team at David Douglas Diamonds, and we’re continuing our “journey through time” while sharing the real heart of our Mother’s Day tradition: Dazzling Diamonds for Mom. What started in 2004 as a simple invitation to local schools has grown into a community writing contest with thousands of letters where kids explain, in their own words, why their mom deserves a diamond.
We walk through how the program evolved, from the early years with only a few entries to today’s масштаб of participation: dozens of schools, hundreds of classrooms, and over 8,500 letters. We also explain how we honor students so the experience feels meaningful beyond a single grand prize, including grade-group diamond winners and classroom recognition. Then we share this year’s winning letters from kindergarten through fifth grade, packed with sweetness, humor, and the kind of honesty only kids can deliver, from “she has good cooking, but sometimes she burns it” to heartfelt lines about a mom choosing care every day.
We also get real about the operational lessons that shaped the tradition. One year grew too large, and we realized long drives for a pickup weren’t actually serving families. And when COVID hit mid-contest, we debated canceling, then chose to improvise with virtual presentations so the celebration could continue.
The ending lands where we didn’t expect: a teacher shares a seventh grader’s memory of winning years earlier, and how that moment helped her believe in her writing and keep creating. If you care about Mother’s Day stories, community traditions, youth writing, or the hidden ripple effects of encouragement, you’ll feel this one. Subscribe for more, share this with someone who loves their mom loudly, and leave a review telling us the best line you’ve ever written in a card.
